Meet Sunny
Sunny is a 2 year old Golden Retriever, originally from Columbia, hand-selected and professionally trained by Matt Skogen of IronHeart Training Center, who brings over 30 years of experience in canine detection training. He successfully completed an intensive, hands-on training program focused on real world mold detection and consistent, reliable alerts.
He has been trained on a variety of molds associated with water damage, including Stachybotrys, Chaetomium, Aspergillus, Fusarium, Penicillium, and other species, and can detect odor across materials like drywall, wood, plastic, and other building materials. His daily training is based on real mold samples placed in realistic settings, rather than synthetic scent aids.
Sunny’s favorite thing in the whole world is his Chuckit! ball, and he only gets it when its time to work. The second it comes out, his whole demeanor shifts, he locks in and knows it’s time to focus. It’s his game, his job, what he genuinely loves to do, and you can feel that when you watch him work. In between, he’s a goofy, happy golden, but once his nose is on a scent he’s all business for his ball.
Meet Ali
Hi, I’m Ali. I’m a registered nurse, mom, wife, and someone who had her life completely flipped upside down by mold. In 2024, I got really sick. What started as a cold that wouldn’t go away slowly turned into something much bigger, affecting my ability to work, think clearly, and even feel like myself. It was constantly one thing after another, a growing list of symptoms that didn’t seem connected. I had gut feeling that it was more than just bad luck, stress or apart of getting older.
I went to doctors, specialists, referrals, and had testing done. I trusted the process and still walked away with a long list of prescriptions, a lot less money, and no real answers. I felt dismissed and hopeless, but deep down I knew something wasn’t right and refused to give up. After months of searching and trying to connect the dots, I finally found my answer - MOLD!
Sometimes you just need one person to say, “I believe you.” For me, that was my husband, and it meant everything during a time I was losing my mind in a world full of people saying “but there’s mold everywhere.” I know what it feels like to sit in your own home and feel like something is off, trying protect your family, not knowing where to even begin. It’s like falling down a rabbit hole with no clear way out.
If there’s anything I hope Sunny and I can give people, it’s that same support. Someone in your corner who believes you and helps you start finding answers. Becoming Sunny’s handler has given me a way to turn my own awful experience into something that actually helps others. Finding mold is only half the battle, but it’s also the moment everything changes!
